The exhibition Bits and Pieces of a Place is a chronicle of artist Kat Cole’s relocation to Pittsburgh after earning her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Drawing from the often-grey skies, rusted bridges and unique topography of this city, the work provokes conflicting feelings of isolation and crowding. Cole uses found metal cast-offs in constructing her sculptures and jewelry demonstrating a unique bond she has found with the “Steel City.” Enameled metal cuffs form smoke stacks that become personified by their grouping and precarious stances. Clusters of dilapidated houses less than an inch tall remind viewers of the various neighborhoods in Pittsburgh that seem perched on hills. Through the fabrication of these tiny recycled steel houses, utility poles and other forms that act as metaphors for the individual the artist is able to express the loneliness of being transplanted and the strangeness of becoming familiar with a new place.
